Grass Valley Voters Will Vote on Weed This Fall

Grass Valley voters will get a chance to tax cannabis this fall. It would be a first, vital step toward welcoming cannabis businesses to the city.

The resolution approved by the City Council last week will put a measure on the ballot allowing the city to tax cannabis businesses based on square footage or gross receipts. If it passes, the Council would then pass an ordinance legalizing cannabis in the city.

The tax structure would appear as follows:

  • a tax of 50 cents to $4 per square foot annually for cultivators
  • a tax of 2% of gross profits for testing labs, as well as manufacturing, processing and distribution businesses
  • a tax of 4% of gross profits for retail and delivery
