Beverly Hills Bans Trick-or-Treating

There will be no trick-or-treating in the ritzy neighborhoods of Beverly Hills this Halloween. On Tuesday, the City Council passed an urgency ordinance banning the practice. The ordinance also bars so-called “trunk-or-treating” out of cars and spraying shaving cream (there go our plans).

“While I know this is disappointing news, especially to our children, we believe this is the responsible approach to protect the health of the community," Mayor Lester Friedman said in a statement. Crowds can easily exceed safe numbers on Halloween night, and children aren't exactly known for their adeptness at social distancing, hygiene, or self-control.

Los Angeles County health officials initially announced a similar ban. They then reversed course, offering guidelines that merely discourage trick-or-treating to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
