New Law Allows State and Local Law Enforcement to Utilize State-Licensed Labs for Cannabis Testing

State and local law enforcement agencies will now be able to utilize state-licensed testing labs to test cannabis under a bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

SB 1244 allows licensed testing laboratories to receive and test cannabis samples from state or local law enforcement or prosecuting agencies.

“This bill closes a void in existing law that blocks public agencies from identifying unsafe cannabis products that endanger their users,” said Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), who sponsored the bill with Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer.

“By providing offices such as mine with access to State-licensed cannabis testing laboratories, SB 1244 creates an effective model for testing cannabis for contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals,” said Feuer. “And that will enable us to take strong legal action to protect consumers. I would like to thank Sen. Bradford for authoring this significant legislation, and Governor Newsom, for signing it.”
