$151,574 to $184,676 annually and is dependent upon qualifications. The City offers a generous benefits package.

Under the direction of the City Manager and/or Assistant City Manager, the Public Works Director leads a full service public works operation, plans, directs and oversees a broad range of engineering and public works services. The City’s Public Works department operates with a budget of $7.3M and approximately 50 employees. 

The City of Commerce operates under Council-Manager form of government.  The City of Commerce has an operating budget of nearly $60 million and employs 125 full-time and 175 part-time employees to provide City services.

The City of Commerce is seeking a Director of Public Works who is experienced, technically competent, energetic, thoughtful, strategic, politically astute, yet apolitical and has the professional integrity to remain composed and objective. The ideal candidate will possess strength of character, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively address differing perspectives with a consummate level of diplomacy, transparency, and relationship building. The successful candidate will display exceptional critical thinking skills and quality staff work to help facilitate good decision making by the City Manager and City Council. The ideal candidate will possess strong program management and long-term planning and budgeting expertise with resourceful approaches in securing funding and implementation of key projects with short timelines at a rapid pace.

Successful candidates should possess a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Business or Public Administration, or related field; AND five years’ experience in Public Works, Capital improvement projects, land use and facilities management. A valid registration as a Professional Civil Engineer is required.
Proven experience in the delivery of a multi-year capital improvement program is a requisite.
