Emergency Medical Services Nurse - Fire Department

Under general supervision, the Ventura County Fire Department Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Nurse is responsible for performing professional level work in identifying, developing, delivering, and evaluating Emergency Medical Services related education and training for Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians; conducting continuous quality improvement (CQI) audits, analysis, and recommendations; providing medical guidance and feedback to mentor and improve the quality of patient care decisions and outcomes. Provide clinical skills such as administration of vaccinations, assume program management responsibility for one or more special programs i.e., Basic Life Support (BLS) training program, Infectious Disease Program, Quality Improvement program, and Vaccination Program.

The EMS Nurse works with VCFD Basic Life Skills and Advanced Life Skills first responders to ensure and improve the proficiency of pre-hospital patient care with a variety of assessment and analytical techniques.

The incumbent in this position will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with personnel from hospitals within the county as well as other county agencies to support an efficient, competent county EMS system.

The EMS Nurse works with hospital liaison nurses to review patient care, develop and deliver skills training. Additionally the incumbent works closely with the VCFD medical director to coordinate recommendations for improvement of systems within the Fire District EMS scope.

Completion of a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC), or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Minimum five (5) years of experience in coordinating EMS programs, and/or pre-hospital care or emergency room patient care. Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Possession and maintenance of a current valid Registered Nurse license or equivalent higher medical degree, which allows for the administration of vaccines and management of controlled substances, issued by the State of California, or licensure in another state with California licensure pending. The original Registered Nurse license must be presented at the time of the selection interview. Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver license is also required.

DESIRED (but not required):
  • Previous experience as an emergency room nurse, Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN), flight nurse, pre-hospital care coordinator, or base hospital coordinator.
  • Experience in program management and/or program coordination.
  • Experience providing EMS related training.
  • Desired certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS).
  • Possession of a California State Department of Education Community College Teaching Credential.
  • Advanced degree in healthcare, business, public administration or related field.
