The City of Alameda is a 10.6 square mile island community of approximately 79,000. The City is organized under 14 departments, and provides a broad range of services including fire protection.
The City of Alameda is seeking an experienced, capable, and progressive leader to serve as its next Fire Chief. The Alameda Fire Department is comprised of dedicated professionals committed to the Department’s mission to mitigate the impact of hazardous situations on life, property and the environment through effective response, prevention and preparedness programs. The Fire Chief provides leadership and support for the efficient delivery of these services through six divisions: Administration, Operations (including Water Rescue), Emergency Medical Services, Training, Disaster Preparedness, and Fire Prevention.
Out of 117 Fire Department positions, 110 are sworn personnel who work out of four strategically located fire stations, staffing four fire engines, two fire trucks, and three ambulances 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. In addition to responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, Department members perform community outreach and education, provide fire and life safety consultation on new construction projects and review construction project plans for compliance with City and State fire codes, and work to ensure that the City and its residents are substantially prepared for a disaster or major emergency.
The ideal Fire Chief candidate will display a leadership style that reflects a contemporary understanding and approach to the evolving nature of fire service. They will be an exceptional critical thinker and innovative problem solver who is not afraid to pursue new ventures. The individual selected must be committed to keeping the Department on the industry forefront and helping to advance the profession overall.
Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills will be considered. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five (5) years of command level experience and a Bachelor’s degree. Experience serving a Bay Area local government entity is highly desirable. A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is also preferred.
