The County Manager's Office (CMO) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Principal Management Analyst. This is an excellent opportunity to join a committed team of hard-working, intelligent, and innovative professionals.

Under the direction of the County Chief Financial Officer and as part of a team of three Principal Management Analysts, one Lead Management Analyst and eight Management Analysts, the Principal Management Analyst assists in the development and production of the County's $3.9 billion budget; assists with the coordination of county-wide budget monitoring and preparation of regular financial performance reports; performs fiscal and policy analysis on issues impacting County departments; leads efforts in policy development, policy compliance reviews, program reviews, countywide studies, and special projects; and makes well-informed written and oral recommendations to the County decision makers. The Principal Management Analyst oversees the work of the Management Analysts and their assignments to department customers and may be assigned as the budget analyst for a few department customers.

The Principal Management Analyst will play a critical role in the upcoming redesign of the County’s performance management, including training department customers on the use of performance data to effectively manage programs and services; semi-annual reporting to the Board of Supervisors; the implementation of Countywide administrative/fiscal improvements; and the mechanism for providing transparency to the residents of San Mateo County. 

This work requires the use of independent judgment and the application of extensive knowledge of government finances, accounting, and government programs and organizations in meeting a wide variety of complex problems involving continual public, intergovernmental, and interdepartmental relations.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Experience: Two years of professional experience performing a wide variety of administrative support duties.
Education: A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, public policy, business administration, finance, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
